Overview of the Pearson Test of English (PTE)

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based English language proficiency test that assesses a candidate’s skills in four main areas: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. It is widely used for study abroad, work, and immigration purposes in English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA.

Key Features of the PTE Exam

PTE test is designed to evaluate real-life English skills through various question types, including essay writing, summarizing text, multiple-choice questions, and listening to audio clips. One of the key features of the PTE exam is its AI-based scoring system, which ensures fairness and accuracy in grading. The test is usually completed in a single session of about two to three hours, and results are typically available within 48 hours.

PTE Exam Modules and Their Components

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is divided into three main sections:


1. Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes)


  • Read Aloud Read a given passage aloud.
  • Repeat Sentence – Listen to a sentence and repeat it.
  • Describe Image – Describe an image shown on the screen.
  • Re-tell Lecture – Listen to a lecture and summarize it in your own words.
  • Answer Short Questions – Respond to simple questions based on general knowledge.
  • Summarize Written Text – Summarize a paragraph in one sentence.
  • Essay Writing – Write a 200–300 word essay on a given topic.

2. Reading (29–30 minutes)


  • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks – Fill in missing words in a passage.
  • Multiple-choice, Single Answer – Answer a question based on a given text.
  • Reorder Paragraphs – Arrange jumbled sentences in the correct order.
  • Multiple-choice, Multiple Answers – Select multiple correct answers from the given options.
  • Reading: Fill in the Blanks – Fill in missing words using a drop-down list.

3. Listening (30–43 minutes)


  • Summarize Spoken Text – Listen to an audio clip and write a summary.
  • Multiple-choice, Multiple Answers – Select correct answers based on an audio clip.
  • Fill in the Blanks – Listen to an audio and complete the missing words.
  • Highlight Correct Summary – Choose the best summary of an audio recording.
  • Multiple-choice, Single Answer – Answer a question after listening to an audio.
  • Select Missing Word – Identify the missing word in an audio clip.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words – Identify incorrect words in a transcript.
  • Write from Dictation – Type a sentence after listening to it.
